Stage 2A opens: what Civic commuters noticed in the first week

Travel times from Alinga Street to Commonwealth Park are landing close to the projections. The platforms, less so.

Light rail's long-awaited extension into the Parliamentary Triangle quietly began carrying passengers this week, and early data from Transport Canberra suggests the new run from Alinga Street to Commonwealth Park is hitting its eight-minute target during peak.

What riders are flagging is the platform layout at Edinburgh Avenue, where the southbound queue spills onto the shared path during the 8.10 service. Transport Canberra says it is reviewing crowd flow and will trial a second validator by the end of the month.

Business owners along London Circuit are cautiously optimistic. Foot traffic past the City Walk frontages is up roughly 14 per cent on the same fortnight last year, according to data shared by the Canberra Business Chamber.

The bigger test arrives once Stage 2B crosses the lake, but for now the first leg has done what it was meant to: move people, on time, without drama.
