The new Molonglo River crossing opened to general traffic at 6 am Saturday after a low-key ribbon cutting on Friday evening.
The 380-metre bridge completes the missing link between Whitlam and the Tuggeranong Parkway, removing a 14-kilometre detour via Cotter Road for residents heading south.
Transport Canberra reroutes the 71 and 72 from Monday. The active travel path on the southern side is sealed but not yet line-marked.
A formal community day is scheduled for the last weekend of next month, with the road briefly closed for food trucks and a fun run.
