Molonglo River bridge opens, knocking ten minutes off the Whitlam commute

The new Molonglo River crossing opened to general traffic at 6 am Saturday after a low-key ribbon cutting on Friday evening. This milestone marks the end of a significant construction phase for the region, providing a direct connection that locals have been anticipating since the first suburbs in the valley were established.

The 380-metre bridge completes the missing link between Whitlam and the Tuggeranong Parkway, removing a 14-kilometre detour via Cotter Road for residents heading south. By bridging this gap, the new infrastructure successfully integrates the Molonglo Valley road network with Canberra's broader arterial system.

For residents of Whitlam, the bridge represents a substantial change to daily routines. Until now, a trip to the southern districts required a lengthy loop, but the new four-lane alignment allows for a more direct and efficient commute, knocking approximately ten minutes off the journey.

Transport Canberra reroutes the 71 and 72 from Monday. These bus service adjustments will allow commuters to take advantage of the new river crossing immediately, streamlining public transport travel times between the Belconnen and Molonglo regions and reducing the reliance on older, indirect routes.

The bridge has been designed with an emphasis on capacity, featuring four lanes to ensure traffic flow remains consistent even as the surrounding suburbs continue to grow. The structural completion of the bridge signifies the final piece of the local road network puzzle for this part of the territory.

Active travel has also been a priority in the bridge design. A dedicated path on the southern side of the structure is now available for cyclists and pedestrians, providing a safe and scenic way to cross the river away from the main vehicle lanes.

A formal community day is scheduled for the last weekend of next month, with the road briefly closed for food trucks and a fun run. This event will offer locals a chance to walk the length of the bridge and celebrate the completion of the project before it becomes a permanent fixture of their daily drive.

Drivers are advised to familiarise themselves with the new intersection layouts and speed limits through the area as the bridge enters its first full week of operation. With the connection now live, the Molonglo Valley is more accessible than ever for residents and visitors alike.
