Three consortia made the shortlist published on the Major Projects Canberra portal this morning. Two are led by European tram builders; the third is a domestic consortium with a Sydney rail track record.
Each consortium will now develop a reference design for the contested Commonwealth Avenue alignment, including the wire-free section over Lake Burley Griffin.
The shortlist comes despite ongoing federal heritage review of the parliamentary triangle works, which the Minister has said will run concurrently rather than gate the tender.
Contract award is expected mid-next year, with first passenger services targeted for 2031.
