The ribbon was cut quietly on Wednesday morning, but riders found the new asphalt within hours.
The 2.4 km extension closes the gap between the Belconnen interchange and the Sullivans Creek path, removing one of the city's most-complained-about pinch points on the commute.
For the next eight weeks Macarthur Avenue drops to one general traffic lane in each direction in peak hours while signals are retimed. Transport Canberra says it expects bus reliability to improve once the bikeway absorbs commuter cyclists currently sharing kerbside lanes.
The next stage, linking Aranda to the existing path, is funded but unscheduled.
